A Big Year for Patent Expirations

A Big Year for Patent Expirations

During 2012, patents for six drugs will expire, accounting for more than $30 billion in drug spend.  So, the discussions I had with colleagues at this week’s EyeforPharma Sales Force Effectiveness & Commercial Excellence conference focused a lot on finding ways for pharma to make sure patients can continue to access brand products.

After my presentation I had many discussions with conference attendees.  It was clear that this issue is pressing, and I was fascinated by the novel approaches to patent protection that were discussed.   It became obvious to me that manufacturers are not sitting idly by waiting for their products’ patents to expire!

Of special interest was our new Patient Direct program offering which allows patients to receive the brand product through a dedicated mail order pharmacy at an affordable price.  This is a great opportunity for patients who prefer to continue their therapy – or begin therapy – on a brand product they’ve come to trust.

Services that support a product facing patent expiration can make a significant difference in maintaining your patients’ access to their therapy.  I look forward to continuing the discussion on patent expiries.  Feel free to contact me by e-mail or call me at 314-749-5204.
