Partnering with an e-Prescriber to Accelerate Patient Recruitment and Increase Medication Adherence

The process of enrolling patients into clinical studies has been known to cause significant delays in reaching study goals.  With thousands of clinical studies going on at any given time, patients and physicians often are overwhelmed as they sift through information to find a study that is most relevant for them.

Currently, patients can learn about new studies and programs through a variety of resources, but the process of making an informed decision about whether or not to participate can be a challenge without support from their physician.  Therefore, providing physicians with a patient’s most updated and thorough health information is key to patient recruitment.  That’s why UBC has recently joined forces with DrFirst™, a leader in e-prescribing, to deliver efficiencies in patient recruitment and adherence through a system that helps match patients with clinical studies at the point of care.

UBC will work with DrFirst to formulate and create a set of patient identification rules within PatientAdvisor™, DrFirst’s electronic medical record (EMR)/prescription workflow interface, to select patients based on health information from within their EMR.  This partnership will allow physicians to receive customized information during a patient’s visit to identify new clinical studies and commercial programs for which a patient may be eligible.

In addition to providing relevant study and medication adherence information within the physicians’ office, UBC and DrFirst also plan to manage an opt-in database of patients interested in future studies and programs.

This partnership is part of UBC’s InnovationLab™ – a team dedicated to creating new approaches to research and driving patient engagement to improve outcomes and advance clinical research. By combining DrFirst’s Patient Advisor with UBC’s Datalink™ and Digitaledge™ products, we hope to raise awareness of important studies and programs, and transform the way patients engage around their health.

Now more than ever, innovative approaches to patient and physician engagement are essential to successful studies.   Tapping into resources available during patient appointments provide a win-win for patients and manufacturers.
