Specialty Pharmacy Services Lead to Greater Adherence

Specialty Pharmacy Services Lead to Greater Adherence

Specialty patients often face complex and costly treatments for their therapies. Nonadherence among these patients can lead to expensive and dangerous adverse health effects.  Research shows that keeping one organ transplant patient adherent to anti-rejection therapy can prevent more than $19,190 in wasteful medical costs per year.

Custom Adherence Programs have become a way of life at CuraScript Specialty Pharmacy, and we’re seeing a positive trend as a result: our specialty patients are more adherent to their medications and therapies, and thus less at risk for adverse health effects.  As reported in the Express Scripts 2011 Drug Trend Report, 63% of patients utilizing CuraScript SP to fill Gleevec® prescriptions achieved an MPR of 90% or greater compared to 53% for patients who used retail pharmacies. We attribute this increased MPR to CuraScript’s personalized clinical support and extensive patient monitoring.

To start every patient on a better path to drug and therapy adherence, CuraScript performs an initial health assessment. Our staff then follows up to provide patients with education about their conditions and medications. This personalized support continues throughout their course of therapy. This ensures there are no obstacles to prevent patients from taking the medications as prescribed by their doctor.

We’re encouraged by this report and will continue to focus on best practices and new developments aimed at curbing nonadherence as the specialty market grows.
