Spring Cleaning That Saves Lives

Spring Cleaning That Saves Lives

This Saturday, April 28, 2012, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is hosting a National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.  This is a great opportunity for all of us to clean out medicine cabinets and dispose of expired or unused medications in a safe manner.

Jo-Ellen Abou Nader, Express Scripts’ senior director of program integrity, spearheads our efforts to detect and prevent prescription drug waste, fraud, and abuse.  She says this Saturday’s Take Back Day is critical to keeping prescription medication out of the wrong hands.

“We have many statistics on the dangers of the misuse of prescription drugs,” Jo-Ellen says.  “One of the most disturbing numbers is that each day approximately 2,500 teens use prescription drugs to get high for the first time.  Removing unused drugs from the home could save your loved ones from injury or death.”

Last year, more than 188 tons – yes, tons – of unwanted or unused prescription drugs were disposed of through this event.
